November 17th 2021. The Pol clearance. November 17th 2021. The Pol clearance. November 17th 2021 Volunteer day. The Pol clearance. Today’s task: to clear vegetation from the front of the Pol hide. In years gone by, the Pol was a wetland where wading birds could feed and breed, today it is overgrown, the drain from the main dam has become blocked and despite significant efforts to get the powers that be to clear it, no action has been taken. We try to keep the area clear in the hope that one day the area can be re-flooded and we can return the Pol to its’ former glory. Before: … the view from the hide (in September) before we started. There was a great turn-out today, eleven of us in all. Lovely blue sky, a fantastic day to be out. Root pullers are a quick and efficient way to lift those saplings, Steve , John and Pete W get stuck in. Steve shows us the size of the problem we are up against. Not everyone gets a root-puller, Cynthia and Asleigh move in with the loppers …… ……. Edwin finds a nearby-by patch to tackle. An hour into the session and Ange, Pete S and Dave are making a difference. Nearly done, at least we can see the hide now. After: view from the hide, massive difference to the one at the top of the page!
